Women: The good news about premenopause. More information from John Lee, MD about menopause and breast cancer plus other books of interest to women:

You have read the bad news about women and premenopause. Now read the good news for women. The Good News Kenneth Cooper. MD, in his book Advanced Nutritional Therapies writes, "Foods and herbs that are known to contain phytoestrogens and estrogen-like substances--and which you may include as part of a well-balanced diet-- include: soybean products, wild yams, corn, apples, carrots, barley, oats, whole grain cereals, nuts, and berries." Kate Jackson, editor of a physician's assistants' magazine PA Today, says research suggests soy consumption is helpful in combating the risks and symptoms of menopause without increasing the risk of breast or endometrial cancer, and may, in fact, reduce the cancer risk. Soy also appears to be a potent weapon in controlling osteoporosis and heart disease in both men and women. Is soy a drugless hormone therapy? Could be... How much soy? Cooper said that special supplements or large doses should be professionally prescribed. He continued, "But there is one exception: Two ounces of soy protein, taken daily in the form of one-half cup of tofu, one third cup of soy flour, or one cup of soy milk, have been associated with positive health changes without the side effects of drug therapy." One last word from Dr. Cooper, "Phytoestrogens (or isoflavones) not only reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancers, they may also lower total serum cholesterol, and at the same time, raise 'good' or HDL cholesterol. Also, they may slow bone-density loss in women after menopause and lessen menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings. But most important, these positive benefits occur without the known carcinogenic (cancer-causing) risk of more concentrated drug therapy, such as HRT." HRT = Hormone Replacement Therapy = Drugs. |
