Discipline before age 2: Can you spoil a child? That is the question all parents face. Most experts agree babies under six-months old can't be spoiled and can't be disciplined. After six months, however, experts disagree about spoiling and discipline. Daytime Spoiling? Until a baby is six months old, studies have shown that picking her up when she cries, and indeed, catering to her every need will not spoil her. In fact, she will turn out to be happier, more self-reliant, calmer, than if she does not receive attention when she cries. Nighttime Spoiling? For an entire life, starting when we are infants, we will wake up from time-to-time at night. Babies wake up, too, even when they aren't hungry. Crying It Out. How do babies get their needs met? They cry. That is the only way they can communicate during the first bewildering months of their life. Should you let them "cry it out?" Crying or not crying is an important question. Some behaviors are "stop" behaviors. They require a different kind of discipline. Whining, temper tantrums, begging, fighting, etc. are "stop' behavior. How can you stop behaviors in a child who is 2-to-12 years old? Try counting! Discipline Styles and Results: There are three basic discipline styles. These different discipline styles have different results, of course. Setting
