Trouble in the Bedroom? The medical point of view regarding impotence
used to be that is was caused by anxiety. We now have scientific evidence that most
impotence is caused by circulatory problems ranging form clogged arteries to high blood
pressure.
Researchers find that the risk factors for impotence are essentially the same as for heart disease. High cholesterol levels and high blood pressure cause plaques to form in the arteries to the genitals, too. Neal Barnard, MD, writes in his book Food for Life, "The threat to sexual potency may be a greater motivator than the risk of a heart attack. People do have trouble picturing their coronary arteries, while other parts of the male anatomy have a tremendous psychic presence." There are additional ways that diet can contribute
to impotence. Fatty diets contribute to diabetes, which can lead to impotence by
accelerating atherosclerosis. Some drugs used to treat high blood pressure and other
diet-related diseases can also interfere with sexual functions. Anything
that increases estrogen levels in men will create a corresponding drop or suppression of
testosterone and androstenedione. Men can create a hormone imbalance by eating meat or
dairy from animals that have been fed estrogens, which is virtually all US meat and dairy.
Fat cells also make estrogen.
What About Viagra? Even if a pill was your choice for sexual
potency, and it is certainly not mine, Viagra is not for everyone. Earl L. Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D. says, "If you'd like a great, Viagra-free
sex life--for the rest of your life--the first step is good food, good vitamins, regular
exercise, and remembering that a little bit of tenderness goes a long way with your
partner." Personally, I prefer Mindell's approach. |
