Children with handicaps of any sort have special requirements. In addition, parents may need support, education, and counseling. If verbal and mental abuse are present, these are real concerns also, because the results of these types of abuse last just as long as physical abuse. |

| Letter Verbal Abuse Dear Dr. Luv, I have been married to a verbally abusive man for 13 yrs. We have 2 sons ages 8 and 12 and the oldest is also verbally abused by his dad. I am not employed and have been hometeaching the oldest boy but we have fallen behind in studies because of the actions of my husband and my blind packing of things I didn't want him to throw away behind my back (He has done that many times with important things because they were in his way). I would like to know if there is any help available for verbally abused wife and kids BEFORE the abuse gets physical. In my whole working life I never made a whole lot of money in wages and I already know there will be no payments from him even if he is ordered to by the courtss in a divorce as that is his pattern with his ex-wife who has no children. Reply from Dr. Luv Dear Abused: What keeps you from getting out? Today's fathers have to pay child support. The courts will take it out of their pay before the fathers even get the money, if necessary. Something has kept you with this man for 12 years... but if he can't be a real man and face the fact he has a major problem, no one can help him. As for yourself, try Alanon, and Alteen for you and kids. It is for those who deal with alcoholic partners, but it will work for any one who wants help. You can also seek professional help in your area; call around because many have sliding scales. Do something NOW! Time is ticking and the damage may be lessened if you get help for you and the kids soon. The longer you wait, the worse the situation will get. Do you want your sons to grow up and abuse their wives? |
