Glossary

What is a window or a door?

Among other things, they are both holes in the wall. At best, and even when the walls themselves have an insulating value of R-20 or better, these holes leak heat from, or into, your home.

Windows actually provide a very small level of protection from heat or cold.

  • An old wooden single pane window, even with a storm window has an insulating value of approximately R-2.0.
  • A new window, even a  high performing, double pane, argon filled, low-E window, has an insulating value of approximately R-4.0.
  • They leak, adding to the problems.

Good Advice for Home or Apartment

1. Inspect these "holes" in your home every year or have them inspected by a professional.

2. Replace the caulking and weather stripping every five years

It is money that comes back to you immediately in lower utility bills, summer or winter.
