If you have breaks in your thermal envelope, you are bleeding conditioned air. Think of it another way. You are air-conditioning and heating your neighborhood. The cheapest and best remedy for this is to have a blower door test, then hire a professional to caulk and weather-strip your home. Why a blower door test? This test measures infiltration but mainly it will show you just exactly where infiltration occurs--those breaks in your thermal envelope. Why hire a professional? Usually a professional does a better job. But if you home is relatively tight to begin with, any plan to tighten the thermal envelope of a home should also include an inspection of the home's ventilation needs. This is more often true of newer homes than older homes. If you can, be at home for the blower door test to see where the leaks are. Then caulk, caulk, caulk and caulk some more. In general caulking and weather
stripping will pay for itself within one year in energy savings. Caulking and weather stripping will
also help eliminate drafts which makes your home feel warmer when it’s cold
outside. green builder, or green remodeler in North Central Texas or the Dallas-Fort Worth area? Are you purchasing or building a home? Ready to add renewable-energy? Interested in living more sustainably? Contact Terry Jensen Frugal Energy, LLC 972 251-1532 |
