A energy-efficient and green remodel needs to start with a good plan. Often that starts with various tests but it should always start with a good visual energy audit. Why? You need to know the options before you can formulate a plan--particularly if you are going to do the audit in stages. Not every energy audit needs to be more than visual--meaning you do not need all the expensive tests. A blower door test is a good idea after the energy remodel is complete to determine that contractors actually did their job. It is also a good idea to make certain you still have adequate ventilation in the home--although be assured that it is hard to get an existing home so tight it needs mechanical ventilation, it is not impossible. Some tests, such as lead or asbestos inspections in older homes, might also be performed before remodeling is started and, if found, when remodeling is finished to make certain those problems have been solved.
