North Texas gets adequate rain, but most of it comes in the spring and fall. Water-hungry plants are not sustainable landscaping in North Texas without throwing time and money at this type of yard.

Also expect water to get more and more expensive in the future. And for water rationing to make keeping a water-hungry landscape attractive to be more and more difficult.

Pesticides and fertilizers are definitely not friendly to the planet. In fact, a well-manicured yard is actually the most unsustainable "agriculture" around.

If there is a place that you can dig in the dirt, check to see if earthworms are present.

Besides, who will miss those hours in the yard each week?

Best Yards:

Water-Wise Landscaping This will keep you from either paying large water utility bills or having to replace plants with ones that are less water greedy. Something totally out of sync with North Texas, such as azaleas, should ring a water-hungry bell in your mind.

Avoid a neighborhood of highly manicured lawns. This probably means your neighbors will expect you to spend hours keeping your yard--including lots of water and pesticides. You might even look for a few neighbors who have Xeriscaped yards or Buffalo grass lawns. .

Established organic yard and flower beds. This will keep you from having to establish an organic yard.

Food production. All from a small square-foot garden to vegetables growing in the "back 40," to nut and fruit trees are welcome. If it is organic, so much the better.

Rainwater harvesting system. Or even the gutters in place for a rainwater system to be added.

Drip-irrigation systems save time and water.
