|
Most of us take our eyes for granted, never thinking of them as muscles or as organs needing special care. In other cultures, care of eyes is common. Yet, our society does many things from birth to hurt and strain our eyes. We do little to help them. Here is how to give your eyes the care they need for you to see! Eye Care When you are reading, sewing, or working at a computer, take a break every 20 minutes or so and palm your eyes for a few minutes. Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water, and protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses when you are outdoors. Never read in the wrong light. When reading seems difficult, make certain your light is neither too bright or too dim. If in doubt, pay attention to your eyes. If your eyes burn during or after reading or working at the computer, you are not blinking often enough. Remember to blink constantly to keep your eyes from drying out. Breathe: It is easy to hold your breath when you are concentrating, so remember to breath at a normal rate. Your eyes deserve a rest. When you are exercising the remainder of your body, you stretch and rest your muscles afterwards. Your eye muscles s are exercising all day. Give them a stretch and a rest, too. This is best done by shielding the optic nerve from all light, either through palming or through covering the eyes with fabric. |
