Raising Boys and Gender Role Messages: From the time your son is born, you are giving him messages about what "little boys are made of." About boys and parenting a boy:
|
Your idea of the gender roles boys play in society will be imparted to your son. Most parents treat boys and girls differently. It may start with the first toy, the first haircut, even the way you cuddle your baby. Parents may give toy trucks to boys and give dolls to girls.
That same parent might even be upset if the boy plays with a doll or
dresses up like a princess. These messages do not have to be overt. They are often subtle such as the way you hug your son or the way you pull away when he is hurt and wants comforting. Before you can be certain you are giving your son the messages you want him to have, it may be time to examine your own ideas about gender roles. What is the role of males in society today? Should boys and men be tougher than girls and women? Should little boys cry? What are the differences in the world my son will inhabit and the world I live in today? What do I expect from my son? Is it the same that I would expect from a daughter?
