Boys: Many boy issues at school are rooted in his inability to read. Kids who are not reading by the third grad will probably struggle with reading for the rest of their life.

All boys want to succeed in school and get along with their classmates.

If they are having problems in school or falling behind in their school work, they often act up or feign indifference to cover their failure.

When teachers, parents, classmates, and/or friends have negative expectations of a boy, he may soon see himself in a negative light.

Many boy issues at school are rooted in his inability to read.

In See Johnny Read, author Tracy Woods devotes a large portion of the book to boy issues. Additional points brought out by the author include:

• One in three children is a year or more behind in class.
• Kids who are not reading by the third grade will probably struggle with reading for the rest of their life.
• Boys score lower on reading tests than girls and are identified as having reading problems much more often than girls.
• Boys also score lower on national literacy tests than girls.
• Struggling boys act up in class.
• Boys are more likely than girls to misbehave in school. This likelihood increases when they have reading difficulties.
• Boys receive disciplinary action in school far more often than girls.
• Boys are usually more physical and more competitive than girls.
• Half the young adults involved with crimes and drugs (mostly boys) can not read well.

In dealing with issues at school, effective parents look for solutions and avoid blaming the child. They encourage the teacher and work with the teacher to do the same thing.

Planning a reward system for your child is a positive approach to solving school issues. Rewarding positive behavior and focusing on the positive aspects of boy's behavior increases the likelihood that the child's good behaviors will be repeated. 

Punishments, threats, and bribes damage the reward systems you set up for your boy. Plan to use punishments sparingly and with restraint.
